Overview

For first-timers, here’s a summary about driving from Singapore to Desaru by car:

  • Prepare all the necessary documents for your journey. (See Step 1 below.)
  • Decide on preferred border crossing (Woodlands Checkpoint or Tuas Checkpoint)
  • Follow the signboards and directions to reach the immigration checkpoint.
  • Present your passport to the Singapore immigration officer for processing.
  • Drive to the Malaysian checkpoint for clearance.
  • Adhere to customs regulations; declare any goods or items, if required.
  • After clearing immigration and customs, continue driving to Malaysia.
  • Use Waze or follow signages to Desaru; observe local traffic rules.

Before travelling to Malaysia, make sure you’ve registered for Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within 3 days before arrival in Malaysia. Singaporeans are exempted from MDAC.

With that out of the way, let’s go through driving from Singapore to Desaru step-by-step.

Tip:

  • While you’re free to choose either border, it’s best to go to Desaru via Woodlands. This is because Woodlands Checkpoint is nearer to Desaru.

Step 2: Immigration Clearance At Woodlands Checkpoint

As you’re nearing Woodlands Checkpoint, have your passport(s) ready for immigration clearance. When it’s your turn, present your passport(s) to the officer.

Self Driving At Immigration Checkpoint

Alternatively, you can opt to cross the Singapore checkpoint with a QR code. Only the driver needs to scan the QR code. For more information, check here.

Once you’re cleared to go, drive to the JB Checkpoint.

Be prepared to pay the Singapore toll. Driving away without paying—even if the barrier has lifted—gets you slapped with a fine up to SGD 1000!

Step 3: Immigration Clearance At JB Checkpoint

When you arrive at JB CIQ First Link, show your passport(s) to the officer when your turn is up.

Here are some pointers to ensure a smooth process:

  • Roll down your windows and turn on your car interior lights. This makes it easier for the officer to see the passengers inside the car.
  • Make sure you’ve already filled up MDAC

Note:

  • QR code implementation at JB checkpoints will only begin sometime this year. So until then, present your physical passport for clearance.
